Sam Altman-run AI company OpenAI on Wednesday announced that ChatGPT is now available for all Apple Mac users.

You can now use ChatGPT more easily on your Mac. OpenAI’s AI chatbot is available to all macOS users, the company said on Tuesday. The app was first announced before Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, where OpenAI and Apple talked about how the chatbot works with iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

On that platform, users can quickly open ChatGPT by pressing Option + Space after installing the new ChatGPT app.

This makes it easy for macOS users to access the AI chatbot, similar to how they use Command + Space to open Spotlight Search. Instead of regular search, they can access a lot of information with one button press. When opened, ChatGPT appears as a chat window on top of the screen.

OpenAI Brings ChatGPT to Macs and iPhones

When OpenAI announced the macOS app, it didn’t get much attention because it was released alongside GPT-4o, their advanced AI model. GPT-4o can handle text, speech, and video. The “o” in its name stands for “omni,” highlighting its ability to understand different types of media.

ChatGPT’s desktop app was announced in the same press release as a new app for both free and paid users. The company mentioned that it could be quickly opened with a simple keyboard shortcut. Users can take and discuss screenshots directly in the app, upload files and photos, talk to ChatGPT from their desktop, and search through past conversations.

The app was gradually being released to Mac users, starting with Plus subscribers, but today the company announced on X that it’s now available to everyone.

This isn’t the only way OpenAI is working with Apple devices. At WWDC, the companies announced a bigger deal that will let Apple customers use ChatGPT on their iPhones and iPads, including through Siri and other AI-powered tools like Writing Tools. These features, powered by GPT-4o, will be available to Apple customers later this year with the release of Apple’s new operating systems.
