Sam Altman Gone, IT Services Decline, CoPilot Top Of Mind

The tech industry is all abuzz about the dismissal of Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO. Here's timeline of his firing, potential theories on what's happening there. Not sure what I think about this myself, just as long as I can still use ChatGPT to help me with this blog.

Check out this quick video overview to catch you up on the previously president of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019 and (maybe?) previous CEO of OpenAI.

The pandemic fueled the dying embers of Labor Arbitrage, but growth is flattening out

The always provocative HfS analysts Phil Fersht, Saurabh Gupta pay close attention to the IT services space and give a bleak view of IT services growth rates:

"Who’d a thought the Global 2000 would keep finding more and more reasons to keep spending more and more money on global service providers? Yes, they’ve had a lot of fat to keep trimming, but many have finally cut to the bone, and 2023 has seen a nosedive in growth from most of the major service providers...

One can argue that the legacy labor arbitrage model was already running out of steam before the Pandemic, but the rush to the Cloud, driven by those pandemic-driven virtual business experiences, kept that spending on labor-intensive cloud migrations artificially high until everything came crashing down to earth this year"

Great overall view of the market from the HfS crew.

Analyst Blogs Hot On Microsoft CoPilot

Microsoft is rebranding Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise as part of Copilot to simplify the user experience. Among several new updates being added to Microsoft 365 for frontline workers is Copilot’s availability for subscribers to the F3 license.Announced at Microsoft’s Ignite event this week, Copilot will be added to the F3 license starting in December and will be available for no extra cost.

Apparently, what Microsoft also made clear at this event is that it is continuing to move forward on GenAI-based experiences in an extremely aggressive way, but maybe they left some stuff out.
