SALUTING SUCCESS: STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP FROM THE FRONTLINES TO THE FORTUNE 500

SALUTING SUCCESS: STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP FROM THE FRONTLINES TO THE FORTUNE 500

Sitting in the final round of an interview with the CHRO of a mighty organization—who sported a bushy mustache that could rival my own and an intense gaze more piercing than my wife’s—I felt a mix of nerves and anticipation. With a hush, he finally asked me, “Colonel Sab, what do you understand by Strategic Leadership?” I blurted out my view, which brought a smile to his face, giving me hope: “Bhai, pass hogaya!” What followed was a deep professional discussion between an agile veteran and an experienced corporate leader. Coffee was served, fueling our conversation. Enriched by our exchange, I walked out with a confident sway, contemplating the concept of Strategic Leadership. Almost all veterans and leaders proudly display this term in their taglines or CVs, so let’s crack it.

As a young lieutenant in a glorious artillery regiment, my “Old Man” (a.k.a. Commanding Officer) took me under his wings and imparted many lessons, one of which was that strategic leadership isn't just about setting goals and managing tasks—it’s about creating an environment where culture and strategy intertwine. My unit was reborn under his leadership; he was like Mr. Midas, turning everything into gold. Every competition and exam saw us topping the charts, doing proud podium finishes and ultimately culminating in long celebrations fueled by Old Monk. This foundation of strategic leadership was ingrained in my mind, and when I eventually became the “Old Man,” it was smooth sailing. ??

The Essence of Strategic Leadership??? The discussion highlighted remarkable parallels between military and corporate leadership principles. According to an article by Forbes, the leadership paradox is that cultures outlast individuals, yet leaders are the ones who create those cultures. Both statements hold absolute true. So the five pointers which both of us agreed to which paves the way for the ensuring culture of Strategic Leadership.

  • Lead by Example???? In the military, we lived by the mantra that actions speak louder than words—though well-timed strong words still had their place. Leaders who embodied commitment, integrity, and resilience inspired their teams to follow suit. This authenticity cultivates trust, which forms the bedrock of any successful team dynamic. Moreover, leading by example creates an environment where team members feel empowered to take initiative. When employees see their leaders actively engaging in problem-solving and decision-making, they are more likely to step out of their comfort zones, take calculated risks, and contribute innovative ideas. This dynamic not only enhances performance but also nurtures a culture of growth and continuous improvement. ??
  • Communicate Openly and Often???? In a combat zone, clear communication can mean the difference between success and failure. The same holds in the corporate world. Transparent communication fosters a culture of openness and innovation. When team members feel comfortable sharing ideas and concerns, the entire organization benefits. ??
  • Encourage Collaboration????? Military missions require collaboration across units, ranks, and specialized forces. Leaders should cultivate an environment where diverse perspectives are valued. By leveraging the strengths of each team member, organizations can adapt and thrive in the face of challenges. ??
  • Empower Team Members???? In the military, we were trained to take initiative and make decisions on the ground. So was it only Directive style always...Nahhh, it was always a blend of directive, participative, and servant leadership styles which empowers teams to do the same. When employees feel they have the authority to make decisions, it boosts morale and drives engagement, leading to better outcomes. ??
  • Celebrate Successes and Learn from Failures???? In my military experience, after-action reviews were critical for continuous improvement. Likewise, leaders must celebrate wins and analyze setbacks. By fostering a growth mindset, organizations can evolve and innovate more effectively. ??
  • Balance Empathy and Accountability???? With the recent rise in employee well-being concerns globally, leaders face added pressure to make a positive impact. Cultivating a culture of empathy can enhance retention and productivity. However, there must be a clear line between being an empathetic leader and holding the employees accountable. A culture that tolerates behavior misaligned with core values must be strictly amended. ??
  • Building a Lasting Legacy???? As I reflect on my journey from military service to the corporate world, it becomes clear that strategic leadership is about more than just making decisions—it’s about cultivating a culture that supports those decisions. Leaders have the power to shape not just outcomes but the very fabric of their organizations.

By integrating these five principles, leaders can create an environment where employees are motivated to perform and invested in the collective success of the organization. This journey involves continuous learning and adapting, recognizing that strategic leadership is an evolving practice.

Ultimately, effective culture isn’t just an asset; it’s a strategic advantage. As we navigate the complexities of VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) leadership, let’s remember that the strongest cultures are built on the foundations of trust, communication, collaboration, empowerment, and continuous improvement. Whether in combat or the boardroom, great leaders inspire greatness in others. ???

Nice pointers Anand Bhargave. It’s how leaders can create the apt culture and therein I am reminded of Peter Drucker’s famous quote ‘Culture eats Strategy for breakfast’
