Issue #3: Breaking Through, Against All Odds: How Does a Small Company Make It Big?
!Hola, Familia!
The Dilemma:
You know, it's a bit like the chicken and the egg - if you don't have a large contract, no one wants to give you a large contract. I get it. No one wants to be your largest client. No one wants to be the reason you fail. So, what's a determined entrepreneur to do? The risk-taking visionary in me says to surround yourself with analytical folks and protectors and then proceed with caution. Or in my case, at FULL FORCE! My Mother used to say, "no brains, no fears". I'm sure she was talking about my brother.
Rewind the clock twenty five years:
In the bustling heart of Omaha, Midwest Maintenance found ourselves facing just this dilemma. As a minority woman-owned business, we knew firsthand the challenges of breaking into larger areas of business. It felt like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded - daunting, frustrating, and often met with a few head scratches.
Our Journey:
Picture it: Midwest Maintenance, a small janitorial company with big dreams but only a little clout. We were hustling, trying to elbow our way into those coveted larger contracts, but the door seemed to be stubbornly shut. It was tough, no doubt about it. So, we did what any scrappy business owner would do - we got creative.
Cue the subcontracting gigs. Yep, we rolled up our sleeves and tackled the less glamorous tasks with gusto. I mean, who doesn't love a 3 a.m. toilet scrubbing session, right? But hey, it was all part of the hustle. And wouldn't you know it, our hard work didn't go unnoticed. Before we knew it, we caught the eye of a VP within a major company, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Our Triumph:
Today, Midwest Maintenance is the largest MWBE in our state, performing in 9 states, and stands as a shining example of perseverance paying off. We've gone from a small fish in a big pond to a force to be reckoned with, all while staying true to ourselves and our values. And let's not forget our secret weapon - humor. Because let's face it, a little laughter makes even the toughest challenges seem a bit more manageable, never take yourself too seriously. After all, "I wish I would've spent more time in the office" said NO ONE laying on their death bed EVER!
In Conclusion:
So there you have it, folks - the Midwest Maintenance journey in all its messy, glorious detail. It hasn't always been smooth sailing, but you know what? Where's the fun in that? We've stumbled, we've grown, and we've definitely scrubbed a lot of toilets along the way. But most importantly, we've proven that with determination, a team of analytical protectors by your side, and a bit of elbow grease, anything is possible. Until next time, keep scrubbing, keep laughing, and keep dreaming big
***I follow Zachary Rodriguez on Instagram, his authentic food and cocktail recipes look insane! When I was growing up we learned to make chile / salsa in a molcajete. My Grandmother's worn mocajete is now a coveted keepsake, smooth and perfectly full of ancestoral aromas.
