Salone del Mobile Milano: Team Trendwatch Report

Always staying on the pulse of trends and innovation in interior design and furnishings, our team at H?fele Canada travelled to Milan to experience Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile 2024, the world’s leading design event. Inspiration, new ideas, new applications, mind-blowing designs - it was all in Milan and it didn’t disappoint!?

From space-maximizing products to lighting solutions and the evolution of closet spaces, the show provided an unparalleled glimpse into the future of living spaces. For the H?fele Canada team, the event was an opportunity to witness firsthand the latest trends and technologies that are shaping the industry. Read on for our take!

Space Maximizing

The efficient use of space was a consistent observation at the show, witnessed through innovative design solutions. Streamlined cabinetry with low profile and no profile cabinet hardware tucked behind pocket doors allowed the look and function of the kitchen to change with one slide. Glass cabinetry, although functional, gave the illusion of open spaces and created visual continuity. Sleek and minimalistic aesthetics made even small spaces feel less cluttered and more cohesive.

Non-traditional Lighting Placements

Showrooms in the beautiful Brera Design District and the booths at Salone showcased next-level use of lighting in unexpected places. Responsive and intuitive lighting systems were a highlight, along with integrated lighting in every area of kitchens and closets. Open shelving with spotlighting, and lighting inside cabinets and drawers, complete with sensors, were prominent. Perimeter lighting integrated into mirrors was everywhere, and posed an interesting question - is this not a better solution than a separate fixture installed over a mirror? We think so! It’s a clever way to illuminate.

Thin profiles and recessed lighting installed into rails allowed for seamless integration, while lighting installed in the back of shelving helps to add depth and function to living spaces. These trends collectively represent a shift towards more sophisticated and practical lighting solutions.

Closets Come of Age

The evolution of the closet was front and centre in many showrooms and stands. Wardrobe systems were showcased in a way that transcends their conventional roles, embracing a holistic approach to design and functionality. No longer an add-on to a bedroom for storage, closets have evolved into versatile hubs that seamlessly integrate purpose with beautiful design. Closet features included furniture (have a seat and think about your outfit of the day!) and blended vanity spaces, with yes – sinks inside of closet spaces (no need to run to the bathroom every time!) There were also innovations displaying versatile shelving systems and electronic storage solutions such as lifting hanging bars, signalling a shift towards enhanced organization and efficiency.

Movement

Modular and moveable layouts further addressed the challenges of small spaces, offering adaptable configurations to customize living environments according to evolving preferences and requirements.

A dynamic array of products showcased innovative solutions centred around movement. A standout trend was sliding door systems, which offer access to storage areas while optimizing space.?

Sliding islands not only had the “cool” factor, but created flexibility in kitchen layouts, adapting to varying needs. Not using the sink? Slide the island over to create more prep, entertaining or dining spaces.?
