Salespeople are born not made…

The common myth suggests that you can only be good at sales if you were born with the skills; the statement negatively impacting both those that want to be in sales and ‘born sellers’ may believe they have nothing to improve.

Researching the topics and through my own experience, I stand with the majority that ‘most salespeople are made.’

All skills can be perfected through training and development including:?

• Building confidence and interpersonal skills (building relationships, listening and understanding your customer base)
• Product knowledge?
• Mentorship
• Keeping up to date with industry trends
• Setting personal goals and reviewing performance to make improvements?

Some personality types may find confidence and communication skills easier to adapt but EVERYONE can develop. In an article by Duke Corporate Education, ‘In 2010, Harvard Business Review reported that only 37% of salespeople impact their company revenue. Our research found similar statistics where no coaching is attempted, but uncovered low-performers can become stars in under a year with the right coaching.’

So my advice to all individuals (even those born ready!) would be to channel your own self development plan, be patient, keep learning and build upon your skills because practice makes perfect!?

And to leaders…encourage and enthuse your sales team to be the best they can be. Like any profession, to be great at sales, it takes training, development, coaching and hard work. A worthwhile investment all round!
