Salesforce PermissionSet - Upward & Forward with Summer '23

Introduction

Salesforce is introducing following new feature with upcoming Summer'23 release: -

• Set Field-Level Security for a Field on Permission Sets Instead of Profiles (Generally Available)

Background

Earlier while creating a new field, the default and only option for setting Field-Level Security was on the Profile.

To keep Field-Level Security on PermissionSet, the only way with this option was to not select any profile and go to individual PermissionSet(s) and set Field-Level Security separately. It meant: -

• More clicks
• Impression that Profile is still the right place to set Field-Level Security
• Remembering which PermissionSets got access

Way Forward

With this new feature, while creating a new field, the default and only option for setting Field-Level Security is on the PermissionSet.

With this feature: -

• You can setup the Field-Level Security for all the PermissionSets on a single screen.
• Promote adoption of PermissionSet for Field-Level Security
• One step closer to moving Field-Level Security away from Profile (potentially)

Gotcha

• You need to enable this feature (and it can be disabled too). Setup >> User Management Settings >> Field-Level Security for Permission Sets During Field Creation
• You can still go to Profile and set the Field-Level Security
