Salesforce Inspector is officially dead. Now what to devs and admins?

Salesforce; The newest AI tools and their stunning CRM features is what you can expect it to speed up your business data process, but for developers and administrators that spent their whole days trying to use the tool is clearly in the struggles; Like times when we forgot which data type is that field, we would have to navigate through systems to get the answer we needed.

S?ren Krabbe, the GOAT, decided to create Salesforce Inspector; a Chrome-based extension that allows you to inspect data directly from Salesforce UI. This is a game-changer for devs, as it save millions of hours from us being lazy to being productive and start making impact that matters. Reference intended.

What is happening with Salesforce Inspector?

But some of the new users that liked to install the extension on Chrome Web Store are alerted with this message:

"This extension may soon no longer be supported because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions."

This simply means the extension will be forever remembered by Google if they don’t update their extension specs (or simply called Manifest v2) to a newer version (v3). Everyone will not be able to download the extension, add to Chrome, or use the ones you already using in your daily lives. [Ref]

Salesforce Inspector on Google Chrome Web Store with end-of-life support warning

While you can still download it today (as of December 2024), Google has scheduled that extensions using Manifest V2 (this one included) would be entirely removed from the Chrome Web Store as late as June 2025 (Enterprise Edition); but most of the people, the timeline will be faster than this. ??

Therefore, our only options are to either go without the extension or find alternatives. So, what do we do next?!

What are features you will miss in Salesforce Inspector?

While there are some people who don't know what is Salesforce Inspector is for, here's some top features I am in love with:

  • Show field name, API name, data type, value for the record of any Object
  • Import a data with more streamlined features than Data Loader with Insert, Update, Upsert, Delete, Undelete manipulation methods.
  • Query and export a data in Excel or CSV format with Data Export using Salesforce Object Query Language (a.k.a., SOQL)
  • Setup menu search
  • Quick access to object, list view, record id, user
  • Quick glance to Org Limits

Yes, these features are available on Salesforce, but the extension is made to speed up these frequently-used operations in a daily basis.

Introducing the next generation: Salesforce Inspector Reloaded

This extension is a maintained and upgraded version of the original Salesforce Inspector, developed by Thomas Prouvot. It maintains the same functionality and familiar interface as the original, but now complies with current Google extension requirements. No relearning needed.

Update: thanks for the shoutout! Thomas Prouvot

Striking new features in Salesforce Inspector Reloaded

Even though you might already be enjoying features like Data Export and viewing all data that come with the original Salesforce Inspector, here are some features that are exclusive to Salesforce Inspector Reloaded.

Show API name next to field in Page Layout

Starting from today, you can copy API names directly with a single click from the Page Layout. This is a life-saving for me since I work with over 100 fields on the Account object, and I don't need to play memory game anymore.

Shortcuts to Setup page

Access frequently visited setup pages like Permission Sets, Permission Set Groups, Profiles, Users, Object Manager, and Flows in just a few clicks using Shortcuts. Simply type the name and you'll be taken directly to the desired setup page. Think like it is your new Quick Find search field on Setup / Service Setup.

Get Organization ID / Instance ID in 1-click

Some people might find creating tickets with Salesforce Support a type of entertainment. While I won't judge anyone's preferences, I want to let you know that you can easily copy your Org ID and Instance number by clicking the Org menu.

You'll also find the API version, current release version, and upcoming maintenance date for this instance right on the same page. While this information was previously scattered across various menus and sites, it's now conveniently available in one place.

Quick detail + user permission management

Also get to user's permission set, permission set group, and enable logs right within this section. If you liked to “login as a user”, type in the name of the user you like and voila!

The "YOU ARE IN PRODUCTION" banner

Finally, for those of us with ADHD, me included, needs a clear visual reminders when working in Production environments to prevent myself from making irreversible damage to company data, this extension offers a customizable environment indicator.

You can enable a banner that clearly shows which sandbox environment (e.g., dev, UAT, SIT) you're currently working in, complete with customizable banner colors and favicon. This visual distinction should gives you enough reminder to be extra careful around valuable customer data.

Update: Some reported that the banner is not there for you, despite using it for a while. My suggestion is to reinstall the extension or use the beta version: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/salesforce-inspector-relo/lopjgjcglnncikiocpacfdbkmpbfmkcf

Create multiple fields at once with Field Creator

Once upon a time, in the vast kingdom of Salesforce, weary administrators found themselves trapped in a tedious ritual of crafting fields one by one, like a baker forced to bake cookies individually instead of filling a whole oven. But lo and behold, a magical tool called Field Creator emerged from the mists of innovation!

This enchanted artifact granted administrators the power to conjure multiple fields with a mere wave of their wand—or rather, a few keystrokes. Like a master scribe's enchanted quill, they could simply write down their wishes—field names, data types, and permissions—all on a single magical scroll. And for those blessed with ancient scrolls of knowledge (or as common folk call them, "import files"), they could summon dozens of fields in the blink of an eye, breaking free from the chains of repetitive field creation.

Thus, the administrators worked with newfound joy, for gone were the days of endless clicking and waiting.

and here's some more described by the devs

  • Security improvements
  • Field Creator page to bulk create fields from the extension
  • Event Monitor page to subscribe to Platform Events from the browser
  • Import / Export configuration from Option page
  • Customise extension shortcuts
  • Support SOSL and GraphQL languages
  • REST Explore page to run any API from the extension without external tool
  • Load recent records from popup
  • Customize extension favicon and Sandbox banner
  • Check QueryPlan on data export
  • Enable Logs from User tab
  • Customize settings in Option page
  • New Org tab
  • Search for a particular flow, profile or permission set from Shortcut tab
  • Restrict Salesforce Inspector usage with a default connected app
  • New "Shortcut" tab to quickly access setup menu
  • Link to permission sets assignment from User tab

Hi Op, I would like to mention our product Brobench which has many advanced capabilities including best query editor, results viewer and in grid bulk editing. Chedk out features at https://help.datasert.com/docs/brobench/editions/ Install from https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/brobench/lndibgemjcmiehfllbedihgpdbmafbgi

I disagree with the statement "no relearning needed" I find the new Inspector to have too many bells and whistles and not intuitive to find the basics .. like what record type am I looking at? which was a go to function for me in some orgs with Inspector.

Omg if this isn’t click bait! Lol I almost had a panic attack thinking inspector reloaded was going away. I don’t think I know anyone who’s still on the old inspector, but I’m sure there are plenty out there. Thanks for summarizing this

Nobody says inspector and means the old inspector anymore. It's dead for a year, maybe more... Now Inspector Reloaded IS inspector ?? Inspector is dead! Long live Inspector!
