In Sales, Who Should You Listen To?

In Sales, Who Should You Listen To?

Working in sales you can often find yourself caught between the devil and an angel on your shoulder.

Devil - "Sell, Sell, Sell!!! Always Be Closing, Don't give them a chance to talk, get that signature and go!"

Angel - "Listen to you customer, find what they need, build trust, find the best solution for them"

Who should you listen to?

On the one hand, you may find following the devils advice will get you more sales and you keep pushing for closes. Following the angels advice will build you stronger long term relationships and may uncover better sales opportunities.

The devils advice does come with a bigger rejection risk and can very easily put customers off. The advice from the angel can result in the customer finding better alternative solutions or being sold to by a more aggressive competing sales person.

Can you listen to both?

Balance can very much be the key, and if you can find a way of acting on the advice of both angel and devil, you may have a solid formula for success. Build trust with the customer, listen to them, find solutions for them, but always have the close on your mind and always look for the right opportunity to get the sale.

A common trap for sales people is to follow just one bit of advice, where as if you can master both you should find much more success.

Who do you listen to?

Do you find yourself following more of the angels advice? Or the devil? Or do you try and follow both? I'd love to know so please do write your views in the comments box.

Balanace apporach is very tough, devils don't give chance to listen any one else. Ultimately, good suggestions, angel listening could have long term benifits....thanks for sharing

An angel's approach usually always works! But hey .. I still get cold calls from a 'devil' like sales people. And I can assure you, I would never take their call again.
