Sales - Trait, Skill, Art?
What is sales?
At its simplest, we know it is exchange of products/services for monetary value. We do it every day - from corner shop and convenience store to purchasing new car, house, etc.
I stand at the point that sales includes three elements: a) Trait, b) Skill, c) Art.
A. Trait - When talking sales as a trait I have in mind person that does it. Some of us are born with it, some of us acquire it, and some of us don't have it. Best sales people know how to sell themselves first.
Product/service comes as a secondary after you make grand entrance, raise curiosity, draw attention, take bold approach. In a way, sales trait is the breaking point that decides whether you will come be able to to discuss your product/service. It includes your whole personality from outgoing mindset and clearly set sales goals to appearance and attitude to communication.
B. Skill - Sales skill implies that you have top notch knowledge of your product/service, feel comfortable with every aspect of sales process, know how to use sales techniques to motivate customer ( never manipulate ), handle tough situations. It means that you did many sales and, naturally, had more sales failures and dead ends. Sales skill is honed only through attempts, errors, unpleasant conversations especially at the very start of sales road.
It implies that you must know human psychology very well in order to conduct different types of sales, with different customers, recognize their motives and needs.
C. Art - Sales as art is the crowning achievement of the sales road. It means you are doing sales in unique and recognizable way, i.e. your way. Your personality shines through every sales process. It is my deepest belief that bridge of mutual trust is the foundation of successful sales. Patience and persistence.
You are not going extra mile for your client, you are going a hundred extra miles if need be. You are making long term connection where fact of sales - product/service for money - becomes formality. Why? Because, you trust each other, like each other, chose each other as the seller and customer. It is so because human factor does not have competition in making customer 100% satisfied and happy.
Finally, as a sales leader you are able to pass skills, knowledge and experience to the new generation of sales leaders.
Feel free to share thoughts and impressions on the sales topic. This is two side road on many levels.
