Sales Tax News (you can use) - Week 11/22

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Sales Tax News newsletter, where we highlight the latest news and updates on sales tax policies and their effects across the nation (and this week Canada as well). Here are the top stories we're covering this week:

  1. Canada: Tax Breaks Proposed Ahead of Election Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has proposed targeted GST tax break ahead of the next election. Exemptions around "children’s clothing and shoes, toys, diapers, restaurant meals, beer and wine. It also applies to Christmas trees, a variety of snack foods and beverages and video game consoles." As well as send a one time check of $250 CAD for workers that made less than $150,000 CAD in 2023. These measures aim to address affordability issues and boost support for his administration. 2. Tennessee: Renewed Push to Abolish Grocery Sales Tax A Tennessee Democratic lawmaker has reintroduced a bill to eliminate the state’s grocery sales tax. Republican leaders express openness to refining the tax code, potentially reshaping this effort. Source article.
  3. Kentucky: Sales Tax Exemption for Precious Metals Questions arise about sales tax on gold and silver in Kentucky, after Governor Beshear used a line-item veto on that section of the bill, writing in part, “I am vetoing this part because if you own gold, you can afford to pay sales tax.” This left questions as to legality of his veto rights in this bill as the courts have yet to settle this, meaning the sales tax still applies in the meantime. Read more here.
  4. Las Vegas, NV: Surprise Sales Tax Increase Proposal A proposal to increase sales tax appeared unexpectedly on the Clark County Commission agenda, sparking debate about potential uses and impacts on residents. Source article.
  5. North Tustin, CA: Zip Code Change and Sales Tax Concerns North Tustin residents voice desire for their own zip code and removing themselves from the rest of the citizens voting from Santa Ana’s citizens. In 2018 Santa Ana voters enacted a sales tax increase up to 9.25%. By having a zip code change North Tustin residents can remove themselves from the higher tax rate. Interesting tactic if you ask me. Read more here.
  6. Missouri: Counties Challenge Marijuana Sales Tax Ruling Several Missouri counties plan to appeal a court ruling restricting the collection of marijuana sales taxes, raising questions about local control over cannabis-related revenues. Source article.
