Sales Recipes

I am obsessed with NY Times Cooking, as much for the Comments as for the recipes themselves. Some recipes lend themselves to endless variations and improvisations. Sam Sifton actually includes No Recipe Recipes in some of his columns!?

But the readers’ improvisations, including the why and the results and what they’ll do in the future if they ever make the recipe again are endlessly entertaining and insightful.

Those are almost universally limited to non-pastry recipes. While cooking is about chemistry as much as creativity, pastry is unforgiving if you stray from the formulas while every other recipe is welcoming of wide variations, like a solo by Miles Davis.

So, what’s this got to do with sales??

Sales scripts are not pastry recipes.?

Any sales manager who tells you to just stick to the script, no matter how unnatural it feels is setting you up for failure…unless it’s a script to make a chocolate mousse!

Sales scripts are like recipes for a stew. They set out the basics that are open to improvisation, to do what feels comfortable that pleases your and your prospects’ palates.

  • Do your research.
  • Gather your tools and ingredients.
  • Familiarize yourself with the recipe.
  • Prepare your mise en place.
  • Then, create!

Even if the outcome isn’t exactly what you wanted, you’ll have had fun and learned valuable lessons.?

The next time, and the times after that, your stew will only improve!

If you’d like my beef stew recipe, leave a comment with your best cooking experience.

Sounds delicious - I love cooking up sales! A cup of inquiry, a dash of empathy and several tablespoons of asking for the next step.
