Sales Navigator and Frankenstein Searches: Part 3 - Job Titles and Seniority Levels

Sales Navigator searches are a mashup of many elements, each a significant project. I break down the elements in my Frankenstein search series and optimize each. In the end, each component is combined into a Super Search.

One problematic area for Sales Navigator users is knowing when to use job titles and/or seniority levels. Although they CAN be combined, they are usually used as one or the other.

To say that this topic is a “monster” is a simple truth.

Sales Navigator Job Titles are just what you think - the words people use in their profiles to describe their jobs. They might be current jobs, past jobs, or a combination of both. These are titles like president, account manager, marketing director, etc.

Sales Navigator Seniority Levels are another matter. This is where algorithms and mechanical categorization come into play, and where these factors exist, there is room for error. We have a solution for this, so pay attention.

Job Titles

Job titles are are where we do most of our work with clients as it is the most accurate.

Job titles can be used when you type in a job title and see variations of options. You simply pick it from the list. This is the most basic way and delivers the most basic results. You can do better.

For example, you can add Boolean search techniques, here, you create a statement with commands that let you get even more precise than picking one title at a time.

Here is a simple Boolean search example:

Manager OR Director OR “head of”

Here is a more advanced example:

(Sales OR Marketing OR Event OR Events) AND (Manager OR Director OR VP OR “Vice President” OR “head of”)

We have built Boolean searches with 50 or more of these commands for SUPER-accurate clients.

You can exclude job titles just as you can include them, which helps create very precise searches. There are two techniques.?

1. The NOT command

2. The “circle slash” technique (recommended)

Then click on the “circle slash” to get this:

Seniority Levels

With Sales Navigator Seniority Levels, you can simplify your search process and use LinkedIn's algorithms. This is a good option if you don't need to be extremely particular about the titles you seek.

For example, the title CXO can mean many things, and that's good. However, if you're just looking for Chief Marketing Officers, it may be different.

CXO refers to Chief “Anything” Officer. In “Sales Navigator Speak,” all that matters are the words “chief” and “officer.” ANYTHING between the two words qualifies. One common joke executives say is “Chief Bottle Washing Officer.” Yep, some people use this as a pun.

Combination

The real experts in this area will combine the two - a Frankenstein of sorts.?

We might use a seniority-level filter like CXO and then look at the results for a few pages to see what shows up.

Then, we might eliminate the “chief” titles we don't want, such as Chief Marketing Officer or Chief Revenue officer. In a simple example, it looks like this:

We can go a lot further…

This explanation just scratches the surface of what is possible, but it gives you an idea of what is possible. Sales Navigator can have 50 or more words in these statements to zero in on what you seek.
