Sales Is a Meritocracy & Rent Is Due Every Day

I was watching Tony Romo on ESPN yesterday talk about how football is a meritocracy and your performance every day is required to "pay your rent"

When you show up to work, you have to give it your all to earn your position. Tony recently lost his starting QB position to his back-up quarterback Dak Prescott. Of course he's upset about it, but the person who performs each and every day wins. The person that can pay their rent every day, wins.

The Romo clip on how "Football is a meritocracy" is below for viewing pleasure:

It made me realize that this is the same for salespeople. As a sales person, you're an entrepreneur that's renting a desk at an office and renting the right to sell your products and services. To pay your rent, you have to sell your products. To earn the right to work at that company who is employing and investing in your salary / commissions, needs to get their rent paid.

As a salesperson, rent is due every month. If you're not generating revenue for your employer, you're not paying your rent and you're not providing a return on your employer's investment.

I meet many sales people that talk about all the deals that they used to close and the big quarter they had a month ago, a year ago, a decade ago, etc. You know, that one time when they were 130% to quota.

The hard truth is this:

"No one gives a shit about what you did yesterday or quite frankly what you did last week, last month or last year. "

The only thing your employer and your family care about is "What sales have you generated for me today and what are you going to generate for me tomorrow?"

It's not about yesterday's win, last month's win, last year's win. It's about "What are you going to do for me today to make me money?

Tony Romo couldn't pay his rent, someone else could for him and they took his starting QB role. The same thing happens to salespeople so just remember to always work hard and hustle every day - Always be prospecting, pitching and closing new deals. Always give it your all.

"Wake up every day as if rent is due and go out there and pay your rent! "
