We visited Corfu for the first time, expecting hot weather and relaxed surroundings. It wasn’t what we expected and lessons were learned.

Do Your Research
When it comes to coaching and investing in myself, I go big. Yet this holiday at a 5-star resort was so cheap, I bought it. We arrived, unaware it was their Easter holidays. Shops and buses were shut for two days – and it rained more than Northern Ireland. I should have done my research, but the cheap price distracted us. Same rule in business. Always do your research before investing in somebody.

Overdeliver
In today’s business world, when people deliver, it’s often to the minimum standard. I won two American clients in April, so had to deliver LinkedIn training on holiday. They gave me the manager’s office to work in, with coffee, at no extra cost. They also checked I was happy with this room afterwards. This was over and above the call of duty and I wasn’t charged extra. Not enough people overdeliver in sales.

Enjoy new experiences
I’ve never been a plane spotter. Our hotel was by the runway. Watching a plane take up at close range is awesome. I spoke about this to one of my new clients whose father was a plane spotter and we bonded more over the experience.

Talk to new people
About 10% of the guests were by themselves. I spent 3 years alone during and after my divorce and it was the toughest 3 years of my life. So I make it a habit to talk to people who are by themselves and often ask them to join me and Rachel for a drink. Some had been divorced and were struggling. One had a holiday booked with her partner and they broke up, so she took the holiday. ?So much of sales is helping and listening and making people feel important.

Turn off your devices.
Before lockdown 1 out of 5 people had mental health challenges. During lockdown, it was 2 out or 5 and in 2023, it’s 3 out of 5. There’s many reasons behind this. One is our addiction to technology. I didn’t post on LinkedIn for a week and feel better because of it. It’s vital to get regular breaks from technology, not just on holiday. ?You come back to work stronger.

1 年I love how you've put a positive spin on all the situations, Niraj. Most people would moan about the noise of the aeroplanes, not turn into a plane spotter! I bet you made the holiday for those singles - well done both of you, you are a lesson to us all. ??
