Sales Lessons From My Mother

My mother doesn’t want her personal life being discussed on social media. So I won’t be sharing stories about her life. Instead, I will share her values that will enable you to do better in sales.
?
1.???? Learn To Forgive
This is one of the toughest lessons I’ve had to learn. When someone has done you wrong, learn to forgive, not because you are weak, but because you are strong. When you go through life holding grudges, it affects your happiness and mood. This will reduce your sales and impact relationships.
?
2.???? Take Chances on People
After my divorce, I was broken. Then lockdown happened and kicked me harder. I was approached by a publisher Access Bookboon about working with them.
I said no because I had lost faith in people. Mum advised me to give people a chance and hear what they have to say first. I did and 4 years later, How to Sell When Times Are Tough is the gift that keeps on giving. The royalties and clients I've won from this have outperformed my 3 books - and my first book, Everybody Works In Sales, was a bestseller.
?
3.???? Never Stop Learning
领英推荐
The more you learn, the more you earn. Mum still buys me books for my birthday and Christmas on stoicism, emotional intelligence and mastery. Everything in sales starts inside your head. If that is a mess, you make less sales. Never stop learning and stop asking for help.
?
4.???? It Doesn’t Matter What You Say, It’s How People Perceive What You Say
Your tone matters. Important communication should take place over the phone, face to face ot at least Zoom. Email and text can be misunderstand. This is important in family and business.
?
5.???? Go Old School in a Digital Age
Mum still communicates by letter to childhood friends. Long thoughtful letters with real feelings. As a result, I send?handwritten thank you cards to every new person that works with me and often birthday cards and thank you hampers.
People appreciate it when you make an effort. In sales today, not enough people make an effort.

8 个月Values that add true value! Thanks so much Niraj for sharing your mum’s wisdom (and yours!). Happy birthday to the wonderful lady. And what a beautiful photo of you all!
Great points , Niraj Kapur and happy belated birthday to your mum. So true about handwritten notes as an example - I have kept for many years a "wish you luck "card that you gave me when I moved to Hong Kong 8 years ago... the heat and humidity eventually blurred the pen ?? colour , but the flowers ?? stayed. Thank you for the reminder.
