Sales lessons from the LEGO Titanic

It had been sold out online for months. We were losing hope.

On a lark, I headed to the local LEGO store just to see if it was there.

Didn’t call first…just went (living on the edge here).

The display model in the window had a sign: ?????? ???? ??????????

I went in anyway.

“Welcome to the LEGO store. Can I help you find anything?” an associate asked.

“Just looking,” I said. In case it was there, I wanted the satisfaction of finding it myself.

Lo and behold, there it was on the shelf. The Titanic.

Ecstatic, I picked up the box. It was huge and heavy but I wanted the satisfaction of lifting it myself too.

Plopped it on the counter.

“We can’t keep those in stock,” the cashier revealed. “They sell out the minute they arrive. So we don’t even bother updating the sign in the window.”

Once I had paid I realized I somehow had to get this thing from the store, through the mall, across the parking lot (I parked by Macy’s), and into the car.

The cashier taped handles onto the box. Those broke halfway across Macy’s.

So I ended up pushing the box along the pavement. Thank goodness it was packed well, with a sturdy outer box protecting the inner ones.

Finally got it to my car, and a woman nearby happened to see me and offered assistance lifting this behemoth box into the trunk.

At that point I gladly accepted!

Two weeks later, this masterpiece was assembled and on display.

Turns out this console table, which we've had for years, was the perfect fit!

Never underestimate the power of

• believing in what's possible
• discovering for yourself vs. going off hearsay
• being in the right place at the right time
• pushing through despite all the friction
