Sales Leadership is About Investing in Others
Sales leadership is about investing in others. I say sales leadership for a very simple reason... you can't be great in sales without being a leader and you can't be a great leader without selling.
Selling is about relationships, communication, understanding and, most of all, trust and integrity. Early in my sales career, I didn't see sales in this light. I saw it purely about the commission and making the numbers. In those days, the customer was purely a tool to help me make my number. I was obsessed with that approach and yet I remember how I also had an ugh feeling in my stomach the entire time. I knew something wasn't right, but it was never strong enough to overtake the drive to make the number.
As the years went by, the pit in my stomach finally grew big enough to impact my thinking, and that's when the transformation began to take place. When I began to shift my focus to being obsessed with helping others and putting them first, it was amazing what happened. The pit in my stomach went away, but better yet was how I felt. Sales was no longer an activity of targets to hit. It was now a mission to help people. And yes, the results I had been so obsessed with early in my career became even bigger.
Today I look at what I get to do as an honor I take seriously. It's an honor to have a level of trust with others that allows me to help them in ways they never considered. The mission I'm on will never end because to me it's a lifestyle.
The definition I use to describe sales is simple. "Sales is about helping others see and achieve what they didn't think was possible." Will you join me on this mission of helping others?
I admit I'm passionate about this issue. I feel strongly it is my duty to help shape and impact the sales industry. The more we increase our impact and influence, the more we can help others. Sales is the greatest profession, because each day we have new opportunities to impact and influence others.
