Sales Community - The "Seller's Journal"

The "Seller's Journal"

The idea of a 'seller's journal' is a practice many veteran sales leaders have followed through out the entirety of their careers. Bill Swales talked about his in this weeks TSI, originally being inspired by John Clavin for the idea of a red notebook to take notes at HBS, which to this day he carries with him. Rich Geraffo similarly shares this same best practice “The Seller’s Journal” in my book, which contains an amazing collection of his learnings.

Randy's Tips to Sell More ?? Excerpts from Your Go-To Sales Advisor

The “Seller’s Journal”?

By Richard Geraffo, VP of Sales for Amazon Web Services at AWS?

What the Idea Is:?The “Seller’s Journal”?

Why It Is Valuable:?I have kept a “Seller’s Journal” for over fifteen years. Each and every time I meet an executive, CEO, or innovative customer, I make a journal entry to capture my “learnings.” I find myself often referring back to the journal when I need a refresher on critical business topics.?

How It Works: Here’s an example: I met Mark Hurd during my studies at the Stanford Executive Program. I listened to Mark describe what he thought the “role of a CEO” was. I captured his thoughts and put them in the journal.?

As another example, I also have in my journal the definitions of “strategy” and “execution” and why they are different.?

I have also captured the most interesting “interview questions.” For example, if you were trying to understand how the candidate thought about building their teams and what they considered critical attributes, you might ask, “If you had to build a team of only three people, who would you hire and why? What is the profile of each?”?

My latest entry in the journal is, “Try to fail but never fail to try,” a quote from Coach Adrian Williams-Peloton.
