Ever notice how actors in movies don’t sound like they’re reading lines— but we still know it’s scripted and not real life?
That’s because it’s obviously a performance—it’s a movie.
The audience KNOWS it’s a movie. We KNOW the actors are pretending. There’s no question.
But in sales?
We’ve somehow convinced ourselves we have to sell the same way.
The "Sales Performance" Trap
Somewhere along the way, sales reps started treating calls like stage performances.
Every word, every pause, every moment has to be flawless.
Like we have to absolutely NAIL every single second of the call— because we treat it like a performance, where you CAN’T mess up.
But here’s the problem with that…
Your prospects on a sales call?
They have no clue it’s a script.
(Okay, maybe they do—because so many sales reps sound the same.)
So when you rehearse word tracks, fake reactions, or tweak your voice to match some gooroo’s tonality…
Guess what?
?? It’s not sales. ?? It’s not acting. ?? It’s fake. ?? It’s not authentic.
The Problem With Over-Scripting Sales
And what’s the point anyway?
To sound just like every other rep reading from the same playbook?
Here’s the reality: Prospects can feel when it’s fake—even if they can’t explain why.
That’s why so many sales calls feel off. That’s why they don’t trust salespeople.
Sales trainers will tell you to "disarm" prospects with perfectly crafted questions, to match their energy, to "assume the sale" in your tone…
But when every rep studies the same playbook, you don’t sound authentic—you sound predictable.
The Solution? Be YOU.
What’s wrong with just being you?
God made you UNIQUE for a reason.
You see things differently. You connect differently.
So why are you falling over "experts" as if they know how to be you?
The FASTEST way to dilute what we do as sales pros? Copying instead of creating.
The more we imitate, the less we bring to the table.
The irony? No one can copy YOU.
Sales Isn’t Acting—So Stop Treating It Like One
Maybe stop worrying about "sounding like a pro"— and start selling like yourself.
Because trust isn’t built through perfect delivery— it’s built through being real.
Acting is only acting because the audience KNOWS it's acting.
But when you’re pretending and the other party doesn’t know?
That’s not acting—that’s deception.
What do you think? Have you ever felt pressured to "perform" on sales calls instead of just having a real conversation? Let’s discuss. ??
