IT SalaryMap 2023 - Insights and News
Is IT still a ‘’boys club’’? The analysis we set out to do at the beginning of this year, as part of #ITSalaryMap (#salarybenchmarking survey for #SoftwareDevelopment and #ITServices industry) proves that, indeed, it still is, despite efforts being made by various organisations to encourage and inspire women to study STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, as well as facilitate their access to tech jobs.
Women represent a third of the employees in the company sample analysed in this year’s Winter-Spring edition of IT SalaryMap (179 companies from Romania). The percentage of women developers is somewhat similar (29%).
In recent years, Romania came up in various surveys as one of the EU countries with the lowest overall gender pay gap. Moreover, the results of a recent survey done by Daedalus New Media Research suggest that there are no gender prejudices among the population. Asked who they think would do a better job in equal skills – women or men – more than two-thirds of Romanians say that both sexes would do an equally good job.
However, the results of our own research, focused only on software development and IT services companies, suggest something else. We found that the overall gender pay gap is 16%, in the company sample under analysis (179 companies).
A lot has been said on the topic of bridging this gap and what both organizations / institutions and women themselves could do in this respect.
The Pay Transparency Directive approved by the European Parliament on the 30th of March 2023 has some important consequences for employers as well as employees and will for sure play a big part in closing the gender pay gap quicker (which, according to some, could have taken well over 100 years to close!). A few ideas on what you could do to prepare can be found here.
Now, you must be wondering what additional news, conclusions and insights I could share with you about IT SalaryMap results. In bullet-point style ??, I will only mention a couple of aspects, which I found particularly interesting (and which I can give away for free ??):
1.????Employee attrition / turnover in 2022 – Based on the figures recorded in the first half of 2022, almost a year ago we predicted (or maybe we were just hoping ??) that if the trend continues for the rest of 2022, we might be able to say that ‘’The Great Resignation / Reshuffle etc.” has slowed down in Romania.
We were only partly right. The results below show that employee attrition has only very slightly decreased in 2022. Whether the recent waves of lay-offs in tech (and Romania does not seem immune to this) will slow down employee turnover in this field and make employees more cautious – still remains to be seen.
We will release the Summer edition reports of IT SalaryMap halftime through September, so be sure I’ll update you on this topic. ??
2.????Salary increases throughout 2022
?a.????Based on the data we collected at the beginning of this year, Timi?oara has finally caught up with Cluj when it comes to average base salary – 15.556 lei gross was the average salary calculated for Timi?oara in January this year (64 companies and 9071 job-holders/salaries were analysed), while for Cluj the average gross salary was 15.855 lei (57 companies and 7051 job-holders/salaries were analysed).

b.????Embedded SW Development is also getting up to speed, trying to bridge the gap to Non-Embedded SW Development – meaning web (front-end, back-end, full stack), mobile and desktop app development.
Embedded Software Developers received, on average, a pay increase of 27,84% in 2022 (calculated on the same company sample January 2022 – January 2023 AND ONLY on the job-holders with the same AIMS code from one edition to the other – in other words, employees who did not change their role throughout last year). Meanwhile, Non-Embedded Software Developers (web, mobile, desktop apps) received a pay increase of 15,67%.

This explains how the average salary in Embedded SW Development reached 13.700 lei in January 2023, while in July 2022 it was 11.852 lei gross.

3.????Salary increase forecast for 2023
At the beginning of this year, participant companies forecasted a pay increase of 11,65% on average. We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.
I do hope you've found these snippets useful.
Personally, I am really looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and digging into some Excel files, but first ... vacation awaits. ?? ??
