Saint Rock, Haiti

November, 2015 - Saint Rock, Haiti

Mountains Beyond Mountains--literally and figuratively--fill the landscape of Haiti.  My second trip to Saint Rock was filled with heartbreak as I saw people living in conditions that bring unimaginable difficulty, disease, and hunger. The Saint Rock Clinic provides basic medical services to this area and has improved the quality of life in Saint Rock dramatically, but there is always so much more to do.  Babies are being born with less health issues due to education and better access to prenatal care, however, family planning is still virtually non-existent and sexually transmitted diseases are still a regular part of life.  The opportunities for economic improvement are slim and poor nutrition is still a way of life due to limited resources and education.  Basic medical needs are being met now more than ever and word is spreading, but there is still so much more to be done.

Change on such a large scale takes time, resources, and commitment.  The people of Saint Rock need and want change, but getting there is an up-hill battle full of set-backs. Correcting generations of poor or non-existent education on basic life matters is challenging. Overcoming years of misinformation and lack of resources are challenges the staff and volunteers at the clinic still face. But just like any real change, every effort contributed makes a difference and is needed. The people of Saint Rock have hope in the future and that hope cannot be in vain.  That hope is acknowledged by the Foundation and we build upon it with ever step forward and every promise fulfilled.
