Sail by the light of history

In our earth's story,
is the past but the present,
with the lights turned on?
Our galley is filled
with oarsmen who heave and pull
to the same old beat.
Will men be slaughtered,
will women always suffer,
the poor never eat?
Grasp the story line
as pilots, not driven slaves.
Yesterday lives now.
Our ship's log tells us
where we've been, where we're headed,
what we have weathered.
Don't sail uncharted,
experience extinguished,
turbulence or calm.
To bring Bounty home,
mutiny needs history
to compass the course.
