They Said ‘No Market’. She Sold 24,000 Copies.
Natalia Nicholson
The Most Powerful Black Women are meeting in March. Will you be there?
The first time Lorlett Hudson FRSA came up with the idea for the now-famous Things Mama Used to Say proverb flashcards inspired by the Caribbean wisdom, people had a lot to say.?
"There’s no audience for that here!"
"They’re too Black."
People were so used to dismissing Black culture that they projected their doubts onto her.
But Lorlett refused to listen. Instead of seeking external validation, she leaned into her own beliefs and went ahead to create them anyway.
The result? Over 24,000 copies sold (and counting!) ??
Not only did these cards exceed every sales expectation, but they also continue to provide much-needed, relatable, and humorous wisdom to Africans and Caribbeans who crave a reminder of their roots, strength, and resilience.
?
You see, when you live in a world where you’re constantly reminded of supposed limitations, it takes audacity to dream and even more courage to act.
Lorlett knew this early on.
She also recognized the profound impact of having a strong support system. It was the backbone of her success, and she decided to pass that same power forward.
So, she created One Hand Can’t Clap, a leadership and transition coaching platform that helps Black professionals gain clarity, direction, and confidence in their careers and businesses.
From quarterly development forums to her Vision Quest Retreats in Jamaica, Lorlett is dedicated to guiding ambitious Black professionals toward leadership, purpose, and success.
Because success isn't just about what you do, it’s about who surrounds you when you're doing it.
My Reflection:?
They told her there was no market for her idea. That it was too Black. But Lorlett Hudson didn’t wait for permission, she built her own lane. Now, 24,000+ sales later, the world is paying attention.
The lesson? Your vision doesn’t need everyone’s approval, just your commitment.
I’m thrilled that Lorlett Hudson will be speaking at our upcoming summit! She’ll be sharing her powerful insights on leadership, resilience, and the power of building a support system that elevates Black professionals to new heights.
Question for you:?
Who has believed in you when others doubted? And how can you pay that support forward to help others achieve their dreams?
