SAG-AFTRA Union and Record Labels Agree to Protect Artists from AI Threats

In a groundbreaking move, the SAG-AFTRA union and major record labels have agreed to protect Hollywood vocalists and performers from non-consensual AI manipulation until 2026. The tentative agreement, which was unanimously approved by the SAG-AFTRA Executive Committee on April 10, covers 2021 to 2026 and includes Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Disney Music Group.

The agreement requires explicit and unambiguous consent from the artist before releasing any sound recording featuring a digital reproduction of an artist's voice. This ensures that artists have control over how their digitally replicated voice is used in a recording. Furthermore, the agreement mandates that artists receive a minimum level of compensation and are provided with a detailed description of how their digitally replicated voice will be used in a recording.

This agreement is a significant step towards protecting artists' rights in the face of the rise of AI-generated text-to-music tools like Udio and Suno. These tools have been exposed for generating music remarkably similar to international hits without the consent of the original artists. The agreement ensures that artists are protected and that the essence of music remains rooted in genuine human expression and experience.

The deal is particularly timely considering the release of Udio, which has already been exposed for generating music derived from copyrighted works. With this new deal, record labels have shown a willingness to protect their artists' rights, but there is still more work to be done. SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said, "This agreement ensures that our members are protected. The Record Label Negotiating Committee also expressed its support for the agreement, stating, "Together, we'll chart a successful course forward, embracing new opportunities and facing our common challenges, strengthened by our shared values and commitment to human artistry."
