SAFETYTECH WEEKLY #008

Welcome to the final edition of SafetyTech Weekly News for 2021; the last edition in this format. I'll be switching to fortnightly in the new year and will play around with whether to keep on LinkedIn articles or set up a stand-alone blog site. Thank you for all your support and encouragement with this 8-week pilot project; there really isn't another place to get a wrap up of the latest in tech innovation designed to improve the health & safety of work. So I look forward to bringing you more content in 2022; but for now - lets crack on with what was hot this week in #safetytech.

ScoutDI REMOTE PRESSURE VESSEL INSPECTION LIVESTREAM

"ScoutDI, in cooperation with LRQA and Allnex, demonstrated inspection of a Nitrogen storage tank on Allnex’ premises in Bergen-op-Zoom in the Netherlands. The premise was to test the drone system for inspecting a confined space without human entry"

This case example is worth paying attention to for a few reasons. Firstly, it is a great showcase of the essence of how #safetytech has the ability to improve the safety of work. Second, there are a few different technologies at play here - demonstrating the collaborative nature of the tech ecosystem. There is LIDAR, Drone & remote collaboration platforms all enabling real-time risk management. Lastly, I really love the way this case study is presented... with a dedicated web page, video and photos with explainer text. This doubles as an education resource as well as a business case for the organisation to consume - its a great change management primer. If only all tech pilots were presented this way.

ROBOTIC INSPECTIONS CONTINUED...

Experts predict the insurance industry alone will spend $1.7 billion on robotics systems in 2025...

"We consider the investment in the robot to be a prudent investment because it improves the safety operating conditions for our employees," says Dean Berlin, lead engineer of robotics technology at National Grid. "The robot also presents an advantage in that it's very repeatable. It collects the images from the same angle, from the same vantage every single time, which is very useful because it allows us to compare images collected at different times to each other to be able to see any trends or changes in behavior."

3 TECH TRENDS THAT ARE SHAPING HEALTH & SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

IoT and Wearable Tech were on my 2021 #SafetyTech predictions however I think VR will have it's day in 2022... do you agree that these tech trends are shaping the future of health & safety?

WEBINAR SAVE THE DATE: Remote and Hybrid Verifications, Audits and Inspections – What have we learned?

The International Atomic Energy Agency has a webinar planned for Thurs 20 January 2022 (2pm Berlin time GMT+1) exploring learnings from virtual auditing processes. One of the speakers is Marc Tannenbaum from EPRI who I have worked on an ASME technical committee for remote auditing earlier in the year. He is great and has a lot to share so I highly recommend signing up.

HOW DIGITAL TWINS IMPROVE PHYSICAL SYSTEMS

Digital twins are an exciting emerging technology that demonstrates the convergence of many different technologies, including machine learning, IoT, data streaming, and augmented reality. It will bring a new era of innovation, safety, and efficiency to many industries.

This article explores digital twins and common use cases. For #safetytech, the digital twin has huge opportunity to visualise risk geospatially and hopefully enable better risk management through scenario planning. Read up for more...

DECISION INTELLIGENCE: THIS AI IS BUILT TO HELP YOU MAKE BETTER DECISIONS

If only we could all make better decisions... would we be safer? Enter Decision Intelligence.

"What’s changing the intelligence game for businesses is a new AI category that’s built for commercial settings: Decision Intelligence...
In this new business reality, data teams are no longer hidden away in a back office, building models that never see the light of day. They’re in constant communication with the commercial side of the business, absorbing data from every department, and translating it into immediately actionable recommendations"

THE FUTURE OF AI AND MIXED REALITY IN CONSTRUCTION

"With ever-evolving technologies, the future is looking bright, and the future of construction is no exception" this article explores the use of AI and XR I'm construction"

Immersive realities will extend the use cases of digital twin to the edges of work where high risk tasks are performed - combined with AI-supported decision assistance; workers are equipped with what could potentially be a game-changing set of tools to improve the safety of work. The combination of these technologies are priming to collide in the coming year(s) and health & safety is well-placed to benefit it we can harness the innovation responsibly.

The Pandemic Has Forever Accelerated Technology Innovation For Businesses And Public Safety

A neat wrap up on #safetytech acceleration from the pandemic.

"Throughout this global pandemic we have learned that safety and technology have become inseparable"

SPACEX IS HIRING!

The job description looks pretty standard - boring even. But SpaceX!!!!! A great opportunity to shape the health & safety of work not only on this planet but eventually... Mars. If you get the job - please connect!

POLL: Do you think we will see the adoption of #safetytech accelerate in 2022 or take a back seat to other priorities?

I posted this poll on LinkedIn this week - not many votes so far but based on the current numbers its looking optimistic. So what do you think??Will 2022 be the year we see?#safetytech?accelerate and play a major part in health & safety strategies for companies around the globe? Cast your vote.

That's it for this week!

Thanks again for all of your support - bring on 2022...Happy New Year!
