SAFETYTECH WEEKLY #005

Welcome to edition 005 of SafetyTech Weekly News! Its been another really busy week for #safetytech and an especially massive week for me with the launch of RealWear Navigator? 500 ; the latest in assisted reality wearable technology. I'm excited to showcase RealWear Navigator? 500 in this week's news alongside a curation of the best in #safetytech for the week ending 10 December. Enjoy.

Given the sheer volume of news on the topic... we're going to kick off this week again with a nose-dive into the metaverse.

12 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE METAVERSE

The premise of the Metaverse is that VR headsets, along with haptic gloves, immersive audio, and enormous 3D worlds are coalescing and maturing to the point where we might do actual real things: shop, meet colleagues, design complex machines, get trained on new skills, all within virtual worlds.

Are health & safety professionals ready to step-change the way we work in the metaverse? The technologists are... here's 12 requirements to you get started.

VIRTUAL REALITY COLLABORATION

There is SO MUCH going on in the metaverse and so much potential for safety professionals to explore. VR collaboration is gaining momentum and the technologists in the room are simply waiting for health & safety professionals to catch on...

VR collaboration can be defined as a set of processes, tools, and policies that encourage employees to come together in a simulated virtual space where they can work together in real-time.

ACCESSING THE METAVERSE: AUGMENTED AND VIRTUAL REALITY DEVICES

It's important to note that, in its current form, the metaverse exists as a primordial soup of old and new technologies — as well as some advancements that are still on the drawing board. It will require updated cloud infrastructure, novel operating systems and fully immersive apps. This software layer will rest on top of augmented and virtual reality hardware.

And its not all hot air...

MELBOURNE WATER & DEAKIN UNI VR TRAINING PROJECT

Melbourne Water has been partnering with Deakin Uni to research the effectiveness of industrial VR training Vs. classroom based training as part of an electrical safety training simulator they are developing. This is the industrial metaverse. There will be opportunity to participate in this project and I will update as things progress. Huge shout out to Scott McMillan , a SafetyTech pioneer who was deeply involved in the genesis of this project.

LEIA INC. : A LENS INTO THE METAVERSE - WITHOUT A HEADSET

I love getting regular updates from AR/VR leader, Nathan Pettyjohn who is in the global AR/VR team at Lenovo & president of VR/AR Association & Immerse Global Summit (check out their event on 17 Dec).

This week Nathan provides an overview of an emerging solution from Leia Inc. the 'Lume Pad' that enables creation and interaction with 3D content on a tablet interface. The health & safety use cases are really exciting and centre around improving contextual hazard awareness, task-specific training, project planning etc. I'm looking forward to seeing this solution scale.

CAN VIRTUAL REALITY FIX THE WORKPLACE?

Let's finish off this weeks metaverse segment with an opinion piece from the New Yorker.

Virtual reality could take the overlapping onslaught of information that we currently squeeze into the limited real estate of a laptop monitor or smartphone display, and spread it back out, over both time and space, returning us to a more human rhythm of tackling one thing at a time, each in an environment that’s conducive to the effort.?

Oh.. before we leave the metaverse; here's links to even more content on the topic published this week...

Exhale... that's a LOT on the metaverse... let's move on.

SAFETYTECH JOB ALERT: HSE DIGITALISATION

Arup is hiring for a Group Head of HSE Reporting and Digitalisation based in London (or Europe).

This role will lead the digitalization of Arup’s safety and quality processes and systems into one global system. The project will lead a transformation in how HSEQ data is managed, understood, and acted on. Once the system is established, the role will lead the enlargement, and refinement of the system enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our HSEQ decision-making and insight.

UNLEASH LIVE | WORLEY CASE STUDY: AI ANALYTICS

A phenomenal example of how drone inspection with AI analytics can improve the safety of wind turbine maintenance.

ROBOTIC INSPECTION USE CASE: LRQA + SAFETYTECH ACCELERATOR + SABIC + INVERT ROBOTICS COLLAB.

LRQA?and?Safetytech Accelerator?are investigating how to make inspections in confined spaces safer by using robotics (drones or crawlers). This video was shot during an inspection at?SABIC?Bergen op Zoom with Invert Robotics robots.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ETHICS

This is a huge topic and this framework developed for healthcare is a great model to apply for the use of AI to support health & safety problem solving. The image is a slide from a presentation given at TRAIF21 by Christian Guttmann?- posted on LinkedIn thanks to Anna Danes who regularly posts great content on AI Ethics.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE COMING AI EXPLOSION IN BUSINESS

This article provides a neat overview on the benefits of AI for business and some steps to take now to avoid falling behind.

I anticipate AI to follow a similar curve of development and radically transform almost every imaginable industry. Chatbots, autonomous vehicles, automated manual tasks and even high-level creative brainstorming are going to collectively revolutionize how we do business. More to the point, it’s going to put tremendous pressure on businesses to adapt to the new demands for AI or else perish in the process.?
