May is Mental Health Month?

May is Mental Health Month, and yes, it is a broad and general topic, but one that can seriously impact the workplace and the people who work there.

According to the National Safety Council, negative effects of employee mental distress, as they call it, include “increased absenteeism, negative impacts on productivity and profits, and an increase in health care costs,” adding that companies will see a return of $4 for every dollar invested in an effective mental health treatment. The great news is that there are so many ways that companies can benefit their employees’ mental health - here are some solid ideas from Mental Health America.?

Another very powerful way to improve the mental health of employees is making their safety a priority while at work. This is especially true during the summer months when temperatures are getting hotter and hotter, and for some, the occupational hazards more severe. When you know your well-being is looked after, you’re happier and can focus on the quality of your work. Heat safety is a growing occupational concern but can be addressed through a combination of proactive planning and technologies like cooling work clothing and PPE.?

However you address it, make your employees’ emotional well-being a priority for the organization. No matter what industry we work in, we experience stresses or more that could impact our personal lives and work – let's give our employees the tools and resources they need to cope with these stresses.?

These manual check-ins are problematic because they are at risk of human error, and employees will sometimes need to remember to check-in. Likewise, an employer will only notice if a lone worker checks in to confirm they are okay.
