Safety Zones around Offshore Wind Farms

?1?? Purpose of safety zones

The establishment of safety zones is crucial during the construction (when lighting and marking may not yet be operational), maintenance, and decommissioning phases of an offshore wind farm development.

Safety zones serve to protect:

  • Users of the marine environment
  • Technicians, crew and vessels on-site
  • Wind farm structures

Once the project is fully constructed and operating normally, permanent operational safety zones are only approved if there is a clear justification for their implementation. This is to ensure a balance between safety and co-usage of marine areas.

2?? How safety zones are implemented:

"Rolling basis" will be applied to minimize disruption to mariners and other users of the sea.

This means that:

  • Safety zones will cover only those areas of the total site in which work activities are actually taking place at a given time.
  • Once that activity has been completed in that specific location, the safety zone will then ‘roll on’ to cover the next specific location within the site in which such activity is taking place.

When a structure has been completed and commissioned, the work area then has unrestricted access for navigation.

Regarding the safety of offshore wind farms, we also refer to international conventions on maritime safety. - International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) - International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) - International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers ( STCW) - Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG), 1972 - International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), 1979 - The International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code (https://www.imo.org)

Any rule or strict conditions if the ship (boat) comes into a radius of 500m around the individual wind farm.
