Safety Talk: End of Summer - Yard Work Safety

As summer draws to a close, many of us are tackling yard work tasks to prepare for the changing season. While this work can be rewarding, it also comes with certain hazards. Let’s review some key safety tips to ensure that end-of-summer yard work is completed safely and efficiently.

1. Wear Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Eye Protection: Use safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from debris, dust, and flying particles when trimming bushes, lawn mowing, or using power tools.

Gloves: Wear sturdy gloves to protect your hands from blisters, cuts, and exposure to harmful chemicals.

Footwear: Wear closed-toe shoes or boots with good traction to prevent slips, trips, and falls, especially when working on uneven or wet surfaces.

Hearing Protection: Use earplugs or earmuffs when operating loud equipment, such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, or chainsaws.

2. Use Equipment Safely

Inspect Tools and Equipment: Before starting, check all tools and equipment for damage or wear. Ensure blades are sharp, handles are secure, and safety features are functioning.

Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines for any equipment you use.

Power Tool Safety: Keep hands and feet away from moving parts, and always disconnect power when changing blades or servicing tools. Never bypass safety guards.

Fuel Handling: Refuel gasoline-powered equipment only when it is cool, and always do so in a well-ventilated area away from open flames.

3. Practice Safe Lifting Techniques

Lift Properly: Bend at your knees, not your waist, and keep your back straight when lifting heavy objects such as bags of soil, fertilizer, or equipment. Lift with your legs, not your back, and avoid twisting while carrying loads.

Ask for Help: If an object is too heavy or awkward to lift alone, ask for help or use a wheelbarrow or dolly to move it safely.

4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Identify Hazards: Be mindful of uneven ground, hidden obstacles, and holes that could cause trips or falls. Remove any debris, branches, or objects that could pose a danger.

Check for Wildlife: Be cautious of insects, snakes, or other animals that may be hidden in tall grass or piles of leaves. Wear gloves and boots to protect yourself.

Mind Overhead Hazards: When using ladders, pole trimmers, or other tools, be aware of overhead power lines or branches. Keep all equipment and yourself at a safe distance from power lines.

5. Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks

Hydration: Heat can still be a concern even at the end of summer. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after yard work to stay hydrated.

Take Breaks: Don’t overexert yourself. Take regular breaks to rest, especially if you’re working in hot or humid conditions. Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, or heavy sweating.

6. Store Chemicals and Tools Safely

Proper Storage: Store pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in their original containers and in a secure location away from children and pets.

Secure Tools: Store tools and equipment in a safe, dry place when not in use, preferably locked or in a designated storage area.

7. Plan for Emergencies

First Aid Kit: Keep a well-stocked kit nearby for minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, or insect bites.

Emergency Contacts: Make sure you have a phone with you and know how to contact emergency services quickly if needed.

Conclusion

Yard work is a great way to keep your property looking its best as summer ends, but safety should always come first. By wearing the right PPE, using equipment safely, staying hydrated, and being aware of potential hazards, we can all enjoy the benefits of outdoor work without unnecessary risks.

Stay safe and enjoy your time outdoors!
