Safety is a State of Mind
Robert (Bob) Baron, Ph.D
President/CEO at The Aviation Consulting Group, LLC
You often hear the phrase ‘Safety is a state of mind.’ But what exactly is a safety state of mind? A safety state of mind is an ATTITUDE; an attitude where an individual is constantly aware of the importance of working safely in dynamic working environments (which include both the physical and organizational environments).
Yet, workers with a good safety attitude can, and do, commit errors. These errors don’t typically occur because a worker has a lapse of a safety mindset; instead, there are external (organizational) factors such as time pressure and distractions (error provoking conditions) that precipitate these errors. These errors often involve skipping steps or procedural shortcutting. There are also internal factors, such as complacency, where, fortunately, the worker has a better level of control (such as double-checking and verifying his/her work).
Human Factors training can be a very effective tool for creating an awareness of human performance and limitations. This awareness should provide a good foundation for creating that safety mindset we’re looking for. However, in the practical work environment, situations occur and decisions must be made that may conflict with performing a job safely. This is where personal integrity comes in. Keep your safety mindset active at all times by doing things like recognizing and addressing unsafe conditions, speaking up if needed, double-checking and verifying your work, and complying with documented procedures!
