"Safety is Pure Waste" - The Importance of Collective Buy-In
Recent events surrounding the loss of the Titan submersible, a podcast re-surfaced with CBS, OceanGate CEO Rush Stockton, claiming safety is a "pure waste."
While some may argue that safety can be compromised in pursuit of innovation or efficiency, it is essential to recognize the significance of collective buy-in on safety practices throughout an organization.
In this article, I will explore why every individual, from the top down, needs to prioritize safety as a fundamental aspect of their work and how critical the importance of ensuring a strong safety culture within organizations.
While organizations often focus on safety at the ground level, leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping organizational culture. When leaders prioritize safety in their actions and decisions, they set a powerful example for employees at all levels. By adhering to safety protocols and advocating for safe practices, leaders demonstrate their commitment to protecting the well-being of their workforce. This visible support for safety encourages employees to embrace safe behaviors and fosters a culture where safety is ingrained in every aspect of the organization.
When leadership champions safety, it sends employees a clear message that their well-being matters. I can't tell you how many times I've reviewed the findings of Safety Culture Surveys only to see the workforce gives a low score when asked:
Please indicate where you think leadership and management personnel rank safety on your job site:
Safety is often ranked last, behind Production and Cost Control.
Leaders that prioritize safety directly affect employee engagement and morale levels. Employees feel valued and supported when their leaders actively invest in their safety. This, in turn, leads to increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, and improved overall job satisfaction.
At least in the US, adhering to safety regulations is a legal requirement and essential for maintaining a safe work environment. Leaders must ensure that all safety regulations and standards are met, creating a framework that protects employees and the organization from unnecessary risks and potential legal consequences. By promoting compliance from the top down, organizations demonstrate their commitment to upholding safety standards and fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability.
Clear communication ensures that all employees understand the importance of safety and are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their tasks safely. Leaders should actively promote safety training programs and encourage open communication channels for reporting safety concerns and incidents.
While we know safety procedures and safety equipment are crucial, leadership must take steps to ensure they are building the safest workforce possible. Over the last several years, I've helped hundreds of organizations implement a new approach to understanding behavioral safety on the individual level. I call it, The New Safety Of Science.
