Safety Isn’t Just a Vision on the Horizon

With 2024 in the rearview mirror, it’s time to consider what the future has to offer in the world of automotive safety for 2025.

The focus on safety has never been more prominent, and with innovative technology continuing to make leaps, we can anticipate some key security features coming down the pike this year.

Here are a few that Ficosa has on our radar.

ADAS Sensors Get More Powerful

The sensors that Ficosa and other safety-minded automotive manufacturers use in our Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) will continue to get more powerful in 2025.

These advancements will lead to improved accuracy because of:

  • Higher resolution cameras: Cameras are constantly improving their image quality, and this is no different in the automotive industry. This includes better low-light performance and advanced tracking capabilities.
  • Advanced radar technology: It’s expected that radar sensors will continue to get better at distinguishing different objects and at greater distances. This will help driving in inclement weather.
  • Enhanced Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) capabilities: With LiDAR technology improving, drivers will have access to more accurate driving instructions because of better 3D mapping.

Enhanced Occupant Detection

According to the National Safety Council, approximately 37 children die each year as a result of being accidentally left in hot cars.

Sensors are already able to detect occupants in vehicles, but new infrared and radar sensor fusion technology will be employed to alert parents when small children have been left unattended in a vehicle.

At Ficosa, our inCabin radar will feature Child Presence Detection. While this was introduced in 2023, it will become more expansive.

Safety in Self-Driving Vehicles

Self-driving, or autonomous, vehicles are still a hot commodity in the world of automotive manufacturing.

But it’s the safety features these cars must possess that will determine their fate.

Even though most accidents are caused by human error, reports of autonomous vehicle crashes have made some consumers leery of these automobiles. But with improved sensors, real-time data analysis and the ability to better detect objects in their surroundings, these vehicles should be better able to safely maneuver through traffic.

Connectivity Will Be Common

It’s been estimated that more than 400 million cars worldwide will be connected to the internet by 2025. That’s up from 237 million just four short years ago.

Automobiles will use more IoT technology and 5G networks to connect to personalized service for drivers and to exchange information with other vehicles to improve safety and efficiency.

While connectivity will improve entertainment features for passengers, it’s the automobile’s ability to use the internet to connect to mapping and emergency systems and other cars that will keep us safe.

There will be a lot of other technologies used in automotive manufacturing—particularly AI and machine learning (ML)—that can improve personalized services, vehicle automation and advanced data management, but it’s the improvements in safety features that make the roads friendlier.
