No one should be injured or made ill through their work.
We bring to you the third edition of our Safety First newsletter! In this edition, we explore crucial safety insights, highlighting initiatives specific to India, along with important health, safety, and wellbeing statistics. Let's continue our collective efforts toward creating a safer workplace.
Safety Management India
Thankfully, people everywhere, including India, are feeling more able to be open about their mental health with their employer. That said, high levels of stress, depression and burnout are still being reported in Indian workplaces.
In this issue we explore several aspects of mental health at work, and things that affect and can help to support and improve it. One workplace where tempers can, quite literally, fly (pardon the pun) is airlines.
Worryingly, there have been several recent instances of rowdy or unruly behaviour by Indian passengers on international flights operated by Indian airlines, where crews have faced violent, dangerous, or unpleasant behaviour, including incidents where the safety of the aircraft itself has been put in danger.
Our feature, on pages 12 to 14, outlines a litany of such ‘air rage’ events, which according to those working in the industry are just the tip of the iceberg.
Another industry battling a different kind of challenge is the automotive sector in India, an area of manufacturing with “immense employment opportunities” for young people, according to the Indian PM.
However, about two-thirds of the workers being injured in the Indian automotive sector are under the age of 30, and 1,050 died working in it in 2020.?We look at why this is happening in our other feature, on pages 8 to 11, and what more can be done to reduce accidents, injuries, and deaths in automotive.
