We're thrilled to unveil the much-awaited Second Edition of our Safety First newsletter! In this edition we discover essential safety insights, spotlighting India-specific initiatives, and key health, safety & wellbeing statistics. Let's continue our journey towards a safer workplace together.
Safety Management India
Union membership and influence has declined dramatically in India, as it has in the UK, over the past forty years. While the reasons for this may differ, our economies have moved towards a more flexible employment model. In India, 95 per cent of organisations employ fewer than five people.
Our feature, on pages 6 to 9, asks how this affects the future of health and safety in India, and what role trade unions have to play in securing safer and better working conditions for India’s workers?
With the recent passing of four new labour codes which usher in significant changes to workers’ rights and employers’ responsibilities, the future of India’s unions hangs even more in the balance. But could trade unions hold the key to ensuring that developments like automation and AI are a force for good?
Our other feature, on pages 10 to 13, looks at the risk to life from electrocution during India’s monsoon season.
Data from India’s Central Electricity Authority (CIA) shows nearly 40 per cent of deaths in Indian workplaces are caused by electrical incidents, with on average 13 electrocution deaths a day, which is thought to be the highest in the world.
Huge deluges of water close to live wires and cables makes matters even worse, with numerous recent cases of electrocution in Delhi, after the Yamuna River was overwhelmed by torrential rains. Some regions like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh suffer especially high levels of deaths due to electrical shocks.
With both the number of deaths due to electrocution and their share in the total number of accidental deaths in India on the rise, this risk – alongside traffic accidents and drowning – needs addressing.
