Not an article, rather some dot-points on info that caught my eye (relevant to my journey) from the various Work Health and Safety Regulator media outlets within Australia.

17-Year-Old feel 9.5 meters through a void on a building construction site (1 May 2024) Link

  • Importance of reasonably practicable controls for work at heights and young workers, including but not limited too -
  • penetrations and voids are considered during planning?and design stages and suitable controls are installed before the penetration or void is formed
  • penetrations and voids are securely covered with fit-for-purpose covers that are designed to withstand the load of workers and materials, are fixed in position, and clearly identified so they are not mistaken for construction material
  • young or inexperienced workers are adequately supervised

Safety Around Heavy Vehicles - preventative safety measures?-

  • Have simple safety messaging for site inductions and traffic management plans
  • Ensure vehicles are always properly immobilised
  • Separate people from plant on site
  • Assess the risk factors associated with tasks performed around the vehicle

On 22 Jul a worker died after being struck by an articulated front-end loader at recycling facility

Employer pleaded guilty for a reduced sentence relating to three incidents occurring in 2020, 2021 & 2023 respectively. All three incidents involved workers injuring hands when using plant that had feed mechanisms and pinch points. The ‘repetitive nature of the offending’ was noted in sentencing.
