A safety concern we all should avoide (from the Field)
I have seen lately people working in the VSAT field, posting photos of themselves in front of the rack, or just the rack to show off the new install or retrofit. And many give the IP addresses away for the iDirect or the ACU. Just out of pure curiosity I tried to log on to one vessel, and manage, system had ERROR 4 PCU-ACU error (guess you all know what kind of system this was, and how hard it was to remote access). But I could have changed satellite, removed NMEA HDG string or even changed the LO for the LNB and changed the access for remote access. This is very easy so I urge you all fellow Field Engineers please don’t post photos of the access level on public places. It gives all of us a bad reputation. If you really need to post a photo, then black out the IP for the units and vessel name.

8 年Hi Glenn, Very good point! I have seen a few pictures on Linkedin as you say and thought the same!

8 年Good catch! that's funny, would have been better if you changed the LO while they were still on site! That would teach them. I personally don't even want the antenna logo in the picture if I post it.

8 年One does wonder what kind of network engineering has been going on if the ACU is available to the general public Internet, instead of being limited to sources originating within the operator's network. Sadly it is not the first, nor will it be the last, example of ugly security sins committed by VSAT providers. Of course, even if they had possessed decent technical security on the network their information should not have been posted online. Every little weakness makes the job easier for the bad guys.

8 年I do agree with the valid point that you have mentioned here. I guess that this situation happens due to unawareness of related management and owner companies.
