Safety check avoids potential incident with young girl

This is the first of a series of personal employee stories we are calling “In Their Words.” The stories will focus on safety, diversity, operations, and community, among other topics, as we strive to give you a glimpse inside our company.

In Their Words: Enzo Fabiano

?On my way home recently, I stopped in at an address to quickly grab something. It turned out this wasn’t going to be a regular stop.

As I always do, I folded in the fleet vehicle’s side mirrors, as it’s a trigger for me to complete a circle check prior to driving off. At Enbridge Gas we complete “circle checks,” where we walk around our vehicle to look for hazards before we drive off.

It’s engrained in our safety culture.

When I returned to the vehicle five minutes later, I walked around to the front of the vehicle, only to find a very young girl, maybe four years old, sitting on the curb picking dandelions. She was alone.

Obviously, this was not something I was expecting, but I was certainly glad I discovered her when I did, as something catastrophic could have happened. This little girl made me think of my three children, especially my daughters.

Spotting the girl also validated the hundreds of circle checks that I’ve completed where I found no hazard.

If you are not completing circle checks on a consistent basis on your own personal vehicle, I strongly recommend that you start today!

If this incident had played out differently, the results would have been life altering for the family, their friends, our community, and myself; the negative ripple effect would have been endless.

But thanks to our safety culture it all ended well.

An impactful story that clearly illustrates the dangers of complacency. I'm not surprised by Enzo's diligence. He is a great example of someone who truly lives our corporate values - with safety being the top priority!

Great reminder to continue with simple safety measures like this.

This story resonated with me. The through of what could have happened, if not for the safety culture that is part of all of us at Enbridge Gas, is heartbreaking. Thanks Enzo!
