The Safety Carve Out Is Critical

It's time to cast your vote for the National Drug and Alcohol Screening Association board of directors. There are 7 open seats, so NDASA members can vote for 7 people. I have decided on the 7 candidates who will get my vote and one of the issues that helped me make my choices was the safety carve out.

If the federal government legalizes or reclassifies marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance without a safety carve out, the implications for our country, NDASA's safety mission, and NDASA's dedicated members will be disastrous.

With rescheduling or legalization of marijuana, commercial transportation safety will suffer greatly because DOT will no longer be authorized to require covered employers to test school bus drivers, truck drivers, mass transit workers, airline pilots, and others for marijuana. The safety of all in commercial transportation and on the roads and communities we share will be impacted.

Transportation has always been a way for the people in our ethnically, racially, and otherwise diverse nation to literally reach the means of education, employment, and upward mobility. If there is no safety carve out to require continued marijuana and other drug testing for safety-sensitive commercial transportation employees, we would be plagued by the return of fatal accidents as we saw before marijuana testing.

Without the safety carve out, it is certain, the drug testing industry will become a shadow of what it is today.

NDASA is the leader in advocating for the safety carve out. Before you cast your vote, make sure the 7 candidates you choose support the safety carve out, NDASA's safety mission, and the existence of the drug testing industry.
