Is SafeSearch Affecting Your Website's Rankings?

I am sharing a valuable tip from one of our incredible Project Leaders and a budding SEO Strategist, Valerie Ortega . In the video below, Valerie sheds light on SafeSearch, a feature on Google that could impact your website's rankings.?

SafeSearch protects users from encountering explicit content, such as nudity and violence, in their search results. While this is undoubtedly a valuable feature, it can have unintended consequences for website owners.?

For example, if Google deems your content explicit, it could hurt your rankings. So, could SafeSearch be filtering your website without you even knowing it?

In her insightful video, Valerie explains how to navigate the SafeSearch terrain and improve your website's SEO. Here's a quick rundown of her recommendations:

  1. Add Metadata to Explicit Content: If you have content that Google might consider explicit, add metadata to clarify its nature. This will help Google better understand the context of the content and decide whether it should be flagged as explicit.
  2. Group Explicit Content Separately: Consider grouping explicit content in a separate location on your website. This can help isolate it, making it easier for Google to distinguish between your site's explicit and non-explicit parts.
  3. Enable Google to Fetch Video Content: If your website includes video content, allow Google to fetch these files. Doing so ensures the algorithm can index and understand your video content properly.
  4. Let Googlebot Crawl Without Age Gate: Ensure that Googlebot can crawl your content without encountering an age gate. This is crucial for proper indexing and ranking of your content.

Valerie's recommendations are practical and essential for maintaining a robust online presence and avoiding any unintentional SEO pitfalls that may arise from SafeSearch.

I hope you enjoyed learning about SafeSearch.

Do you have a question about search engine optimization? I’m always eager to perform research and answer any SEO-related questions you may have.?

Chris Raulf I am behind on asking this question - it's been two weeks! Are there specific industries where you are seeing this or is it a general recommendation? For example, I could see alcohol or undergarment brands be affected more readily than, say, a b2b SaaS company or those in building materials.
