Safer with Technology?
Compared to 30 years ago, technology has made it so that our chances of surviving a serious automobile accident are much higher today than then. We have crumple zones, numerous airbags, warning devices for lane departure, automatic brake deployment if there is a stopped object ahead of us, etc. At the same time, technology is such that it builds in so much distraction, it makes all these safety features absolutely necessary. What's wrong with this picture?
I just purchased a new car. It has all the safety gizmos one would ever want in a lifetime and more. Yet, when you get in the car, the screen in the middle of the console flashes a message that "I will operate this vehicle safely, blah, blah, blah". At the end is a green button which says "I Agree". Unless you hit that button, you are not going anywhere. So, you hit "I Agree", start the car and what comes up? The middle console full of at least a dozen apps to completely distract you from what you should be doing--driving. Once you hit "I Agree", besides all the apps being on screen, the radio is also blasting. You must shut the radio off. Amazingly, the car is pre-programmed so the radio is automatically on. How bizarre. I turn off the screen so I'm not distracted. But, if a phone call comes in, the screen reactivates and you need to decide if you want to take the call or ignore it. You have to momentarily take your eyes off the road to see who's calling. Meanwhile, your car is screaming at you that the car in front of you is stopped and you burn rubber hitting the brakes hard. I shut the screen off and 20 minutes later, it comes back on to tell me it is partly cloudy, windy and 51 degrees. Well, I KNOW that. I can see it through the WINDSHIELD. I don't need TECHNOLOGY telling me what I can plainly see.
Car makers: End the lunacy. Make our cars safe. Don't make them technological marvels just because you can. You're killing me!

8 年Len, Who is the car manufacturer so I know not to buy it's products. I like cars with "safety" features I can disable when I find them more distracting than helpful.
