Safer Highways UK to feature innovative approach to workforce engagement
As part of this year’s Safer Highways UK event, a specific session has been devoted to how we use training and learning to improve our workforce’s attitudes to safety.
The afternoon session of the day, which takes place on 8th November 2017 at the NEC, Birmingham, will feature an ‘In the Dock', Mock Trial, delivered by immersive learning specialists Turner Kenworthy, designed at highlighting the consequences of failing to follow accepted procedures and cutting corners.
This bespoke presentation was originally created for the UK’s largest independent surfacing contractor, Toppesfield Limited, for use as a training tool to illustrate the importance of safe decision making, correct briefing and following safe working practices. Toppesfield have kindly given their permission for this resource to be shared with wider industry as a whole.
As part of the session, Glyn Williams, SHEQ Director for Toppesfield Limited, will outline the thought processes behind their radical approach and the improvements his organisation have seen as a result.
The fictitious scenario centres around a Toppesfield gang, involved in the surfacing of the new A5/M1 link road. A number of simple but common mistakes by supervisor and operatives combine to produce an outcome which is the nightmare of many an employer in the highways services sector.
The presentation will show the events leading up to the incident with video reconstructions, details of the subsequent police investigation, and the prosecution itself – all building towards a verdict by the court jury. If you are a director or senior manager of a contractor operating in the Highways England supply chain, this is not a presentation you will want to miss.
