US DOT Invites Public Comments on Title VI Compliance?
For the first time, the department is asking states for feedback by November 29 on federal non-discrimination requirements for federal grantees, which entails having civil rights policies, staff, federal reporting, and compliance that impacts grant sub-recipients.??
NHTSA Consent Order for Cruise??
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a notable consent order with Cruise, including a fine, for failing to fully report on crashes involving pedestrians and vehicles with autonomous driving technology.?
Maryland Adopts All Offender DUI Interlocks?
Starting October 1, Maryland closed a loophole and now requires all DUI offenders to use ignition interlocks. This extensive legislative battle shows that passing an interlock law is often only the first step in putting an effective system in place.??
California: Yes to Enforcing Autonomous Traffic Violations; No to Speed Alerts in Vehicles??
Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation that helps to close an enforcement loophole by allowing police to send a notice of non-compliance to driverless car companies. The governor also vetoed a bill that would have required speeding alerts in all new cars.??
?? A point of contention: vehicles without drivers had a sort of immunity from traffic citations in California. Law enforcement throughout the country is considering what more they need to do to prepare for autonomous vehicles. On the other hand, the rejection of a state-level law seems to put any mandates for intelligent speed assistance back in the hands of the federal government, which largely regulates vehicle equipment.??
More Drivers Using Lane Departure Warning and Prevention Systems?
A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that more drivers are using driver assistance systems, like lane departure warning, compared to a similar study eight years ago. This is largely due to better design, growing acceptance, and greater difficulty to switch it off.??
