NHTSA: Continue AV Voluntary Self Assessments???

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is seeking public comment until December 23 on whether to continue to seek Voluntary Safety Self-Assessments (VSSAs) from companies testing automated driving systems.??

New NHTSA FARS Rural Data Dashboard?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has created a new data dashboard to track characteristics of fatal crashes between urban and rural areas.??

TSA Delays REAL ID Until 2027?

As REAL ID adoption lags (only about 56%), the Transportation Security Administration has extended the prior May 7, 2025 deadline for accepting only REAL ID-enhanced identification documents at airports. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 with an original 2008 start date.??



New York Scaling Up Red Light Camera Programs?

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed new legislation that will dramatically increase the number of intersection cameras in several jurisdictions, and create a new program in Greenburgh.??


AASHTO Safety Summit Participants Discuss the Traffic Safety Crisis?

At this year’s summit, state DOTs and partners gathered to discuss key topics such as the adoption of the Safe System Approach and agency institutionalization of safety culture. Multiple workshops focused on new approaches to speed management and efforts to protect non-motorized road users. Conversations continue about the value of post-crash care in highway safety and how we can better support EMS. Some states are piloting innovative use of telematics data for safety planning. Finally, CS’ John Kaliski presented on the AASHTO/NCHRP national transportation vision framework, or “Moonshot” project.?

IIHS: Strengthen Motorcycle Helmet Laws?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that if every state required helmets for all motorcycle riders, over 22,000 lives could have been saved since 1976.??

AAAFTS: How to Measure What Drivers Know About Vehicle Automation??

A new AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study points to a system of test procedures that can be used to gauge how well drivers use new vehicle technology, and also to develop related training.??
