Embrace the Future: Balance Innovation and Integrity in Education

Generative AI is revolutionizing the business world, but deploying it effectively requires balancing speed with stringent safety measures. McKinsey offers a comprehensive guide to navigating this complex terrain, ensuring businesses can leverage AI’s potential safely and swiftly.

Tackle Plagiarism and Collusion Head-On

How does this guide help the education sector to navigate the treacherous terrain of plagiarism and collusion?

Develop Tomorrow’s Skills

As technology evolves, so must the workforce. Employees (or our students) need to learn new skills tailored to generative AI such as prompt engineering. McKinsey suggests combining formal training with on-the-job learning and creating communities of practice.

"Mastering generative AI takes dedication and it’s a months-long journey to understand and apply complex language models effectively," McKinsey notes.

Our Role as Educators

Where is the fine line between original content and the safe and swift use of generative AI?

As educators, it is our job to show the way. A colleague once asked how we can determine original content when his own original writing does not even pass AI detection tools such as ZeroGPT.

Two words: academic integrity.

In a world where technology helps us create content swiftly, more than ever, we must inculcate integrity in what we do to traverse the treacherous terrain safely. We shouldn't be like an empty can with a coin rattling sporadically when shaken.

Foster Plagiarism-Free Practices

To plagiarize is to claim work that is not ours. The work that ChatGPT does for us must be acknowledged by citing and referencing and by putting the original text in the appendix if needed.

Foster Collusion-Free Learning

When two or more students copy and paste an assignment question into ChatGPT, there might be cases wherein the answers are too similar thus leading to collusion. We can avoid collusion by using ChatGPT as a brainstorming buddy not as a ghost writer. A student came to consult because he failed a course. His reason, lack of time management; I say, priority management. Twenty-four hours before his assignment was due, he was playing football and graciously allowed ChatGPT to write his assignment for him.

What is the Heart of Plagiarism and Collusion?

As educators, we have much to answer for since we have not equipped our students enough to navigate independent learning.

  • Critically read and understand texts. Students can find help in using tools like chatpdf which summarizes content and provides questions to aid understanding
  • Paraphrase the essence of the text to support your argument. Ultimately, students need to understand why they are writing the assignment.
  • Critically think through the assignment question. It is essential and can be developed through argument mapping. Argument mapping uses CRE: Claim, Reason, and Evidence. Tools like MindMup further support this process.
