Country Music: A Film by Ken Burns (PBS) – Ken Burns’s eight-part, 16-hour documentary series, Country Music chronicles the history of a uniquely American art form, focusing on the biographies of the fascinating characters who created it. The film follows the evolution of country music from its diverse and humble origins as it emerged, by the end of the twentieth century, into a worldwide phenomenon. Available in English/Spanish. Ken Burns’ Jazz (PBS) - Celebrates America's greatest original art form. Ken Burns' 10-part documentary opens at the dawn of the 20th century, incorporating American culture and historical events that interact directly with the music. Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl’s Courage Changed Music (Dreamscape Media) - Girls cannot be drummers. Long ago on an island filled with music, no one questioned that rule, until the drum dream girl. In her city of drumbeats, she dreamed of pounding tall congas and tapping small bongos. But when at last her music was heard, everyone sang and danced, and decided that both girls and boys should be free to drum and dream. Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson: Taking the Stage as the First Black-and-White Jazz Band in History (Dreamscape Media) - This biography by Lesa Cline-Ransome featuring illustrations by James Ransome tells the story of legendary musicians Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson. Brought together by the love of playing jazz music, Goodman and Wilson broke the color barrier in entertainment when they formed the Benny Goodman Trio with Gene Krupa. These two musical prodigies from very different backgrounds helped create the jazz style known as swing. Grades 2-6.
Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (Weston Woods) - Based on the Caldecott Honor book by Lloyd Moss. Iconographic images of playful instruments along with lively verse create an exuberant classical music performance. A trombone is joined by a trumpet in a duet and then a French horn adds to the music until ten instruments gather together for this performance. Grades PreK-3.
Ode to Joy: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (PBS) - Ludwig van Beethoven's transformative ''Ninth Symphony'' has been described as the world's greatest symphony. It is recognizable even to the most casual classical music listener. This program showcases Beethoven's musical masterpiece in a rare television recording by the Vienna Chamber Orchestra with the Westminster Symphonic Choir, under the direction of conductor Mark Laycock. Vivid animated scenes, including Mickey Mouse as the eager Sorcerer's apprentice and hippopotamuses performing ballet in tutus, are set to the music of Bach, Tchaikovsky, Dukas, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Ponchielli, Moussorgsky and Schubert. Featuring the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski and Deems Taylor as the Master of Ceremonies. This title has been rated G by the MPAA. Grades K-8.
