Sad Disconnected Angry Children do not Learn!! What we can do!!
I have been studying Martin Seligman's newest research this afternoon! Three take-aways I am building into my courses and presentations!
1. Sad defeated disconnected students DO NOT learn! We have to attend to the PERMA of happiness in our classrooms!
P-positive Affect
E- engagement
R-relationships
M-meaning and purpose
A- accomplishment and mastery
We will address strategies that build these attributes because they can be!
2. Even in trauma , educators have the opportunity to be with students in the most consistent ways and our focus is not to undue the past, but to model ways to control the present experiences ( regulation)
3. Active/ Constructive Responses in moments of even small success matter more in the brain/mind than we could ever imagine! When a child or adolescent shares a small success, we need to ask questions so the student relives this experience as they share it! Tell me what happened. Where were you? How did you feel? Ive seen your work or attitude and this is what I have noticed... More to come!!!
This is where are teacher training needs to enter... now if only our tests were assessing these areas!

7 年Our job is to make our classrooms safe places where children feel that the adult in the room cares about them, and they are important to the adult. It needs to be a place where if the child wants an escape from troubles, the lessons are captivating enough, and rigorous enough to provide the escape, and if the child needs an adult to confide in the adult is there. It is not fair to expect a child going through trauma to be able to learn, and yet we have to make it possible for them to escape and learn so they can rise above the problems they face. Research shows that a caring adult for one year can make a profound difference in a child's life- imagine if the adult cares for more than one year? One must make sure proper boundaries are in place so the child doesn't get hurt even more...

7 年So true Lori Desautels! Our Weaving Well-Being programme for schools is based on the PERMA theory. it's so empowering to bring Positive Psychology into the classroom. As a class teacher I have found it transformative, both for myself and my students. That's how our programme came into being and now it's so amazing to share it with other teachers.
