Sacrificing Today's Convenience for Tomorrow's Wellbeing: Why Selflessness Matters More Than Ever

In a world obsessed with instant gratification and personal comfort, we often overlook the long-term consequences of our actions. The allure of tasty food, the convenience of private transport, or the small advantage gained by encroaching on public space – these choices, fuelled by short-term self-centricity, pave the way for long-term problems for ourselves and future generations.

Consider the humble roadside shop. What starts as a single vendor on the footpath becomes a small shop of 4 poles with a plastic sheet, and which quickly attracts others, gradually forming a bustling market that swallows green spaces and public parking. Similarly, our individual choices regarding transportation, waste disposal, and resource consumption slowly and insidiously contribute to larger issues like congestion, pollution, and environmental degradation.

History offers a powerful contrast. Freedom struggles, while fuelled by the aspirations of millions, were spearheaded by selfless individuals willing to sacrifice comfort and safety for the greater good. Their actions were funded and supported by countless others who understood that individual gains pale in comparison to collective well-being.

Selflessness, in its essence, is about giving, while selfishness is about taking, often for free or by force. We see this dynamic play out in relationships, where gaslighting and narcissism thrive; with families grappling with conflicting values, and with communities struggling to maintain order. In each case, there is often tireless effort of under-appreciated volunteers and participants on one hand, and people with self centric motives on the other.

However, a worrying trend is emerging. Those who advocate for long-term benefits, oppose selfishness, or volunteer their time selflessly are increasingly castigated and penalized when their actions conflict with immediate personal pleasures. This discourages well-meaning individuals and creates a vacuum that attracts and is filled by those driven by personal gain – "goons," activists with dubious agendas, and the simply incompetent.

The result? Chaos. Uncoordinated, self-serving actions pull a community in different directions, leading to fragmentation and dysfunction. People with similar or mutually beneficial agenda or with a common enemy gang together to try and move a group in their self serving direction.

In the middle of these negative forces, selfless people try to get results, and often fail to deliver. The negative forces feel vindicated and stridently and vociferously denounce the failures. This leads to more confusion and chaos.

Psychologically, this creates a feeling of insecurity, a sense of doubt, lowering of self-esteem, stress and therefore a fight-flight-freeze-fawn response. This further aggravates the situation.

Most people in the community are bystanders to this drama. They get swayed by the rhetoric and again feel insecure. One way of feeling secure is to allow the more powerful group win, hoping for stability in an autocracy. This creates stability in the short run, but never yields good results in the longer term.

To avoid this, we must shift our focus. Instead of judging outcomes, we need to appreciate the intent behind actions.

This means supporting those with a long-term vision for the community, even if their initial efforts fall short. It means offering constructive criticism instead of finger-pointing. It means creating an environment where selflessness is valued and encouraged, not derided.

Remember, firefighters, public health officials, and soldiers put their lives on the line for the collective good. They make sacrifices not for immediate rewards, but for the future. We must follow their example and choose sacrifice – of instant gratification, personal convenience, and perhaps even comfort – for the sake of a better tomorrow.

Let us not allow short-term desires to eclipse the long-term well-being of our communities and our planet. By valuing and nurturing selflessness, we can build a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.

Hello Chandra Kant it was wonderful to read your article. I totally agree with you because I have been involved in the area of sustainability, CSR, Spirituality and other related areas for a while and I can see how in the name of immediate gratification we are forgetting the bigger picture of holistic development. Unfortunately we are unable to see that in the long run all of us are going face the challenges whether we are rich or poor or the country is developed or undeveloped. The notion that the earth does not need us we need the earth has to be understood in spirit not as a slogan. Since I work with the Gen Z as students I notice the increase in depression, fear, jealousy, aggressiveness and selfishness among them. They seek pleasure in material goods which obviously cannot grant true satisfaction and happiness. We really need to relook at our concepts of measuring success and meaning of life.
