If you haven't noticed, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have been under attack lately. Instead of focusing on the beneficial aspects of DEI, some are quick to demean and disqualify our efforts. One common scenario is when someone refers to a colleague as a "DEI hire," implying they were hired for diversity's sake rather than their qualifications. As advocates for inclusion, we must be prepared to address these comments constructively and assertively. Here are some responses you can use to shift the narrative and emphasize the true value of DEI.
Highlight Qualifications
"Actually, they were hired because of their impressive qualifications and experience. DEI ensures we don't overlook talented individuals from diverse backgrounds."
Challenge the Assumption
"Why do you assume their hiring is solely based on DEI? Let's focus on their skills and contributions instead."
Reframe the Narrative
"Hiring with a lens of inclusion helps us find the best talent. It's not about meeting quotas; it's about ensuring we have diverse perspectives to drive innovation."
Personalize the Impact
"Imagine how much we miss out on if we only hire from a narrow pool of candidates. DEI helps us discover amazing talent we might otherwise overlook."
Educate on Benefits
"Hiring with diversity in mind bring unique perspectives that strengthen our team and drive better decision-making. It's a strategic advantage for us."
Highlight Fairness
"Everyone deserves an equal opportunity. DEI ensures that we provide a level playing field for all candidates, which is fair and just."
Redirect to Skills
"Let's focus on their qualifications and what they bring to the table. Their background is just one aspect of their overall profile."

Address Implicit Bias
"It's important to recognize that assuming someone's a DEI hire because of their background can stem from implicit biases. Let's give credit where it's due."
Affirm the Value of Diversity
"Diverse teams are proven to be more innovative and effective. DEI isn't just about hiring; it's about building stronger, more dynamic teams."
Call Out the Underlying Issue
"Suggesting someone is a DEI hire undermines their achievements. Let's support and acknowledge their hard work and dedication."
Offer a Learning Opportunity
"It sounds like you might not fully understand the importance of DEI. I'd be happy to share more about how it benefits our organization and society as a whole."
By using these responses, we can shift the focus from unfounded assumptions to the valuable contributions that diverse hires bring to an organization. Remember, DEI is not just about checking boxes; it's about enriching our teams with a variety of perspectives and talents. Together, we can amplify the positive attributes of DEI and continue to push forward for a more inclusive future.
