Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs): Enhancing Energy Efficiency & Sustainability

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) offers essential EPC Certification Solutions to help businesses and property owners comply with energy efficiency regulations.

As energy costs rise and environmental concerns mount, the importance of EPCs is more urgent than ever. The South African government is pushing for increased energy efficiency, and SABS provides the certification to help you meet these new requirements.

Key Information on EPC Compliance

Mandatory EPC Certification: What You Need to Know

Get your building certified and stay compliant with national regulations. According to the National Energy Act (section 19(1)(b)) and Notice 700 of Government Gazette 43792 (published on December 8, 2020), certain buildings must now display an EPC. These regulations are legally enforceable and apply to buildings in both the private and government sectors.

Who Must Comply?

  • Private Non-Residential Buildings: Those exceeding 2,000 square meters.
  • Government Buildings: Those over 1,000 square meters.

Failure to comply with these regulations can result in severe penalties under the National Energy Act 34 of 2008, including:

  • Fines of up to R5 million.
  • Imprisonment for up to 5 years.

Property owners are required to obtain and publicly display their EPCs by December 2025.

Why Should You Get Your EPC?

Stay compliant, save costs, and lead in sustainability!

Obtaining an EPC offers numerous benefits for property owners, managers, and tenants. Here are the key reasons why it’s worth getting certified:

  1. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure your property meets the latest national and local energy efficiency regulations. Avoid penalties and remain legally compliant.
  2. Informed Decision-Making: The EPC provides a clear picture of your building’s energy performance, helping you make smarter, more sustainable decisions.
  3. Market Advantage: Demonstrate your building’s commitment to sustainability, making it more attractive to tenants, buyers, and investors.
  4. Cost Savings: Identify areas where energy use can be reduced, leading to long-term cost savings on utilities and operational expenses.
